The 2018 Cebu Young Writers’ Studio Fellows Announced

The Libulan Queer Collective, a writers bloc of queer poets, essayists, fictionists, and playwrights from the southern Philippines, is set to hold the 2018 Cebu Young Writers’ Studio, a regional creative writing workshop for emerging writers from Central Visayas, from 9 to 10 February 2018 at the University of Cebu-Banilad in Cebu City.

The writing fellows named for this year are as follows: Noemi Araneta Alcantara (fiction: novel in Binisaya), Kenneth Michael M Baba (poetry in Binisaya), Alsteine Joi Diapana (poetry in English), Maria Eloisa H Garcia (fiction: short story in English), Jorisse Gumanay (poetry in English), Maria Theresa C Lanit (poetry in Binisaya), Leah May Lim-Atienza (poetry in English), Ivanie Michmir (poetry in Binisaya),Claire Michaela M Obejas (creative nonfiction in English), Louise Francis P Ouano (poetry in English and Binisaya), Lady Isabelle Y Perez (fiction: short story in English), Sievney Klyze G Quidet (fiction: short story in English), Thomas Leonard Shaw (poetry in English), and John Rolly V Son (fiction: novel in English).

Bulawan Literary Zine of Northern Mindanao’s Issue No. 3: ‘Sendong’

Issue 3: ‘Sendong’ of the Bulawan Literary Zine of Northern Mindanao, a regional literary journal of new Northern Mindanaoan writings, is now available for orders. (Orders and inquiries may be placed via nagmac.submissions@gmail.com.)

The current issue’s impetus is the displacement of typhoon Sendong as a muted narrative. Because the disaster’s aftermath, post-trauma, has fomented a host of creativities in the literary arts demonstrating Northern Mindanaoans’ tenacity despite the collective trauma, it is then an important juncture of survey, collect, and appraise these works in the region’s contemporary creative history, largely unwritten about, as the destruction/renewal thematic showed itself so much more strongly in the local literatures after the typhoon. The contributors in the current issue have explored and problematized typhoon Sendong and, in general, the local Northern Mindanaoan experience of natural disasters, climate change, global warming, affinity to urban/rural places, and individualized/collective narratives from the aftermaths.

Call for Submissions: HALAD: Mindanao Harvest for the 21st Century

‘HALAD: Mindanao Harvest for the 21st Century’, a literary anthology, is now accepting poems, short stories, creative nonfiction/essays, and one-act plays in English, Filipino, and Binisaya written by established and emerging writers born and/or based in Mindanao.

This anthology aims to gather in one book some of the best new Mindanao writings for possible use by high school and college teachers handling 21st Century Philippine Literatures from the Region.

Call for Emerging Writers from Central Visayas: The 2018 Cebu Young Writers’ Studio

The Libulan Queer Collective, a writers’ bloc of queer poets, essayists, fictionists, and playwrights from the southern Philippines, in partnership with Kagis Bisaya and YOUTeacH Philippines-Central Visayas, is now accepting applications to the 2018 Cebu Young Writers’ Studio to be held in January 2018 at the University of Cebu-Banilad at Gov M Cuenco Ave, Cebu City.

The Cebu Young Writers’ Studio, an adaptation of the Cagayan de Oro Young Writers’ Studio, is an annual creative writing fellowship for 14 of the most promising emerging poets, fictionists, and essayists born and/or based in Central Visayas — Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. Fellowships are available per genre — poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. (Applicants may apply for more than one genre.)
